Q & A

The questions
we answer most.

I have never fly fished. Where should I start?

A two-hour walk-and-wade trip, or one of our full-day Orvis Fly Fishing Schools. The two-hour trip puts you on real water with a guide for $125. All of our trips are educational based, so select the trip length you desire and we will teach you as much as we can in each option. Our half-day trip is our most popular excursion and a fit for a first-time never-ever up to a world-class angler.

Do I need my own gear?

No. We provide everything for guided trips and have walk-in rentals if you want to fish on your own. If you have your own gear, bring it and we'll match the rest of the kit to it.

What's the best time of year?

June through September is the busiest because the weather is consistent and all the rivers are fishing. April and May can be great if you don't mind cold mornings. October might be the local favorite: golden aspens, fewer people, big browns. Winter tailwater fishing on the South Platte runs December through March.

How early should I book?

The earlier the better, especially for full days and floats in July and August. Trips book with a 50% deposit, fully refundable up to 7 days before your trip. If your dates are close, call the shop and we'll do our best to fit you in.

What if the weather is bad?

Often when the weather is bad, the fishing is good. We don't cancel trips for weather; we hold permits on water all over the region, so if one river is getting hammered we take you somewhere that isn't. Your safety and your guide's safety always come first.

Can I book a guide for multiple days?

Yes, and we recommend it. We'll set you up with the same guide each day so you build on what you learned instead of starting over. Call us and tell us how many days you have.

Are kids welcome?

Absolutely. We start kids at 10 years old. Kids under 16 are required to have a parent or someone along to provide transportation.

Should I tip my guide?

Gratuity isn't included in trip pricing and is always appreciated. As a guideline, tips generally start around 25% of the guide service charge.

Do you sell licenses?

Yes. Colorado fishing licenses are required for anyone 16 and older. We sell them at the shop, or you can buy one online before you arrive from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
